Laboratory work depends on measurements being reliable, and reliability comes from the right equipment used properly rather than from buying the most accurate version of everything. Class A glassware is manufactured to roughly half the tolerance of Class B and is usually certified. That certification is often what you are actually paying for rather than the extra precision, and it matters where a quality system requires traceable evidence. For the large majority of routine work, making up buffers that will be pH-adjusted anyway, rinsing, transferring and rough dilutions, Class B is entirely appropriate. We publish guidance on Class A against Class B, on reading a meniscus properly, and on the temperature effects that catch people out, because a Class A cylinder read carelessly is less accurate than a Class B cylinder read correctly.

Glassware is normally borosilicate in both accuracy classes, with the same chemical and thermal resistance. The class describes manufacturing tolerance, not the quality of the glass. Items are marked TC or TD, calibrated to contain or to deliver. The two are not interchangeable, and using one as though it were the other introduces an error larger than the difference between the accuracy classes. Calibration temperature is printed on the item, normally 20 degrees Celsius. Measuring a hot solution gives a volume that is not what the marking says, which matters for accurate work. Sample and specimen containers are supplied with closures that seal properly. For urine and stool collection that means a screw cap rather than a push-on lid, since a push-on lid in a transport bag is a leak waiting to happen. Where samples are being transported, the containers form the primary receptacle in a UN3373 compliant package and need to be matched with absorbent material and secondary packaging.
